08 Dec Immortelle | Why is it so good for you skin?
Immortelle, imortela or Latin “Helichrysum” – meaning timeless or eternal – is a plant from the sunflower family that grows in the wild along the Mediterranean region of southern Europe. It is known for its somewhat exotic, spicy scent, so it is often an ingredient in perfumes, but for years it has been primarily used in traditional medicine, especially in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Although there are over 600 species of immortelles, they equally love the warmth of the sun, grow during spring and / or autumn and their (usually!) distinct yellow flowers are a handy addition in bouquets. However, women from the Mediterranean area also know the best trick up their sleeve – it’s fantastic for beauty.
Initially, immortelle was used as a folk remedy to relieve respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis and cough. It is not toxic or irritable, but it is rich in anti-inflammatory properties, so as such it also serves as a highly effective analgesic. Not to be overlooked is its detoxifying effect as it can help the liver cleanse the body of toxins more effectively, as well as the fact that it is excellent in aromatherapy as it helps open the heart, heal old emotional wounds and help create a sense of security. Due to those benefits immortelle will greatly increase in popularity by 2028. But it is also worth knowing that this is a very expensive essential oil, because it takes a ton of immortelle flowers to create just a kilogram of oil.
It is not clear exactly how it works, but immortelle has a handful of skin benefits. Unlike many oils, it is great for oily skin, helping to soothe acne scars, hyperpigmentation and age spots. Immortelle is also considered an ideal addition in products for sensitive skin, because it is so gentle that it can be used on children as well – which is why it is often compared to chamomile. Just like most oils, it helps against dry skin, but it also has a powerful anti-aging effect – it makes the skin firmer and more elastic, smooths existing fine lines and helps with texture.
Immortelle is available in many beauty products today, and due to its uniqueness, we also have it in several Marra favorites: MiMist Makeup Setting Spray, Lash and Brows Growth Serum, and Ellis’s Pearls Primer & Serum.
